Professional Review: Expert Insights
“The Rajkot surface historically favors teams that can build massive totals in the first 30 overs. However, the inclusion of local spinners and the return of India’s ‘Big Two’ creates a psychological edge. Expect a high-scoring thriller where 320 might be the par score.” — CricTalks Analysis Team
In-Depth Analysis: The Transition Era
The 2026 season marks a pivotal shift in Indian cricket. Shubman Gill, now captaining the ODI side at 25, faces the unique challenge of leading his mentors, Kohli and Rohit. While Yashasvi Jaiswal unfortunately sits out despite a recent century, the return of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant adds much-needed “solidity” to the middle order.
New Zealand’s bowling attack, featuring the towering Kyle Jamieson and the crafty Mitchell Phillips, remains a threat. Their ability to extract bounce in the “Last 32 Overs” of the innings will determine if India can reach a formidable total.

Hello And Welcome to CricTalks!
PREVIEW: India face New Zealand in the first of a three-match ODI series in Vadodara. Veterans like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return to action and could be seen in India colours for the last time till July this year, with this being the team’s last ODI series before the T20 World Cup and the Indian Premier League (IPL). It will also be Shubman Gill’s first series since he was dropped from the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup, with the 25-year-old returning as captian of the ODI side. Both Kohli and Rohit spent nearly one-and-a-half hours against Indian seam bowlers in the nets on the eve of the match, spinners and throw down specialists after playing two matches each in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Having scored 77 and 131 in the two matches of the premier domestic competition, Kohli went hard against the Indian spinners and pacers alike. Some variable bounce against the throw down specialists in one of the nets did challenge the batting superstar further. However, India’s middle-order mainstay Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, as well as fast bowler Mohammed Siraj weren’t a part of the three-hour training session, having played for their respective state teams in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Thursday.
Yashasvi Jaiswal may have to make way for Shubman Gill, with India probably choosing to play both KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for some solidity in the middle order. It would be some extraordinary bad luck for Jaiswal, as he had scored his maiden ODI century in just his previous innings.
