As the Miami Heat enter the All-Star break with a lot of work to do to get healthy and turn around last season, one of the bright spots on the team has been Norman Powell during his first year with the franchise. With the Heat guard in Powell finally earning All-Star honors for the first time, he will speak about the possibility of a contract extension with the team.
Powell will be representing Jamaica in the Team World vs. Team USA format of the NBA All-Star Game with the former team. In the final year of Powell’s current five-year contract, which is worth $90 million, he is eligible to receive a four-year, $128.5 million contract.
If unable to agree with Miami on a contract extension by June 30, he will become an unrestricted free agent, although Powell has a preference for how he wants to play this out. According to The Miami Herald, Powell would express how Miami has been “a perfect fit for me”.
“It’s definitely a place I want to be,” Powell said. “It’s been great. Coming here, adjusting. The organization has been amazing. I like where I’m at, I like the setup, I like the mentality, I like the approach.”
Powell added, “Hopefully from what they’ve seen, there will be some good synergy that I will bring to the table.” “And hopefully a deal can be reached at some point. But yes, I see myself here and staying a part of the Heat organization as long as they keep me.”
Heat’s Norman Powell on ‘completing the story’ with All-Star nod
While Powell received an All-Star nod on the Heat, an honor that has been a goal for the guard throughout his career, he will also compete in the three-point contest this weekend, hoping to retain the title in Miami, as Tyler Herro won last year. Still, the story is written on Powell.
Specifically, when it comes to being an All-Star with the Heat, being honored in Los Angeles, where he thought he should have been an All-Star with the Clippers, he said, “It completes the story.”
At any rate, it remains to be seen if Powell and Miami agree to an extension, as he currently leads the team with 23 points per game.
