An interesting new trade rumor suggests that the New York Mets are having some issues with top prospect Carson Benz being the starting right fielder on Opening Day.
For the most part, various positions on the NY Mets lineup are set for next season. Juan Soto and trade addition Luis Robert Jr. are locked in their spots in center and left field. Big free agent additions Bo Bichette and Jorge Polanco are playing third and first.
Francisco Lindor will return to shortstop after recovering from hand surgery and Marcus Semien is the team’s new second baseman. Additionally, former top prospect Francisco Alvarez is expected to start at catcher again. The only position that seems suitable for occupation is right field.
One of the players expected to have a chance to win the job is Carson Benz. Had it not been for Nolan McLean’s final season of talent in the big leagues, 2024 first-round pick Carson Benz would have finished last year as the top prospect in the NY Mets minor league system. However, he is expected to compete with versatile fielder Brett Batty for the position. Or maybe not.
Pirates interested in trading NY Mets infielder Brett Batty

On Friday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette revealed during an appearance on Pittsburgh’s 93.7 The Fan that the Pirates are still looking to make a trade to upgrade third base before Opening Day. And of the six options he’s considering, “The Mets have guys in the game, they have a lot of thinkers.”
The guys he’s referring to are Mark Vientos and Batty from the NY Mets. Various reports in recent months have suggested that he has greater value in the game due to his versatility and strong finish to the 2025 season. The fact that he’s a real possibility for the Pirates is because the Mets are willing to listen to offers, and they should feel confident about Benz being the starting RF on Opening Day.
After being the club’s top pick in 2024, Benz became a full-time member of the organization last year and went through the first two levels of the farm system and finished the season in Triple-A.
