A new report suggests that the Cleveland Browns hired Todd Monken to make something of a quarterback they already have under contract, rather than a quarterback they brought in from the outside.
The Browns have only won four seasons this century. The past 25 years have made it clear to Cleveland fans that, unless you have a top 10 QB, a team has a clear ceiling. That’s why they used their top picks in the NFL Draft on players like Tim Couch and Baker Mayfield, and made a bold offseason trade for Deshaun Watson four years ago.
Yet, despite appointing nine different head coaches this century, none of them have worked. Well, the Browns are starting from scratch again this offseason after they fired Kevin Stefanski and replaced him with former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken.
The clear assumption is that with a new offensive-driven coach, the team will also look to bring in some new QBs this offseason. Especially since they have two first-rounders in April. Additionally, Watson has been a disaster since arriving in Cleveland, and rookie Shadure Sanders failed to impress during his debut late in the season.
Well, it looks like the status quo will remain in 2026, and those QBs will get another chance to become a starting QB in the NFL next season with Monken’s help.
Shadure Sanders and Deshaun Watson will compete for the Browns’ QB1 spot this summer
According to NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe, the Browns are expected to be aggressive in the early rounds of the NFL Draft. But it is not possible to use either of them on the QB.
Wolfe reports, “He has optimism for Shedur Sanders in Cleveland. Especially with Todd Monken now being the head coach. He feels like there’s a little more flexibility in his offense and maybe that gives Shedur Sanders a chance to utilize his playmaking more than Kevin Stefanski.”
“You also have Deshaun Watson, who started throwing again this week with his quarterback coach Quincy Avery believing he will have that competition. So the Browns can strengthen that roster at wide receiver, O-line and other spots and let these guys compete for quarterback spots.”
