Stoke City There was a scout in the stands as FC Porto beat Tondela 2–0. The Championship side will have a clear idea of what is realistic. And even those that probably aren’t.
Porto’s biggest names are once again in the headlines.
Gabriel Veiga came off the bench and changed the game almost immediately by scoring within a few minutes. Victor Frohold scored the second goal and is building a reputation for arriving in the box at the right time. Now he is scoring runs in back-to-back matches. Rodrigo Mora also impressed in the first half, linking up midfield and attack before being sent off.
The issue for Stoke is that all three of them are already being monitored by top clubs across Europe. This kind of focus makes them stand out in a completely different market. And performances like this push them even further out of reach of the championship.
Where Stoke City might actually look
Alberto Costa is a strong example of smart business. The 22-year-old right-back had a very active night, being consistently involved in the attacking phases and making good combinations down the flank. He looks like a player who can contribute immediately but still has room to grow.
Young striker Deniz Gul also fits into that category. His first half wasn’t the cleanest, but he still affected both goals. He assisted Veiga’s opener and played a role in the second move. The ability to influence games without dominating them is often highly valued by clubs.
Tondela offers clear opportunities
On the other hand, players in the away team were operating without the same level of spotlight. This naturally makes them more accessible.
Rodrigo Conceição, Brian Medina and Juanse Rodriguez have all featured and could be seen as potential value options. This is especially true for a club that is keen to develop talent rather than compete at the top level of the market.
Still, Bernardo Fontes stood out. The 23-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper, who holds Italian citizenship, put in another strong performance and saved a penalty. He has been one of Tondela’s most reliable performers throughout the season. There is a growing understanding that sooner or later some big step is going to come soon.
There were also some unexpected presences on the pitch. Joe Hodge started in midfield for Tondela and quietly made another solid change. The 23-year-old came through the academies of Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers before breaking into senior football with Wolves and playing at QPR and Huddersfield Town.
Now at Tondela, he has become a regular starter and one of the main men in their midfield. He was signed from Wolves for a relatively low fee, and given his steady development and consistent minutes, he comes across as a very practical profile. Add in the fact that he qualifies as a domestic player in England, and he ticks a lot of boxes for clubs looking for reliable, ready-made options.
It felt like a useful scouting trip to Stoke City. As expected, specific names influenced, but so did more realistic goals. In particular, Bernardo Fontes looks like a player who won’t stay under the radar for much longer.
