A new report from a Philadelphia Eagles insider is great news for both the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills.
One of the big stories during the NFL offseason has been on the future of star receiver AJ Brown. Last season, the three-time Pro Bowler made no secret of his frustration with the team and how he was used in the offense. This led to obvious speculation that once the season ended, he could go on the trade block.
However, as we approach the midpoint of April, Brown remains in Philadelphia. Most believe a trade hasn’t happened yet because it would cost Philadelphia far more in dead cap to move him before June 1. But when June arrives, it’s still not certain the pass catcher will be traded. And according to rumor the asking price has remained stable.
Still, there is renewed hope for teams like the Bills and Patriots to make a trade in a few months. On Friday, the Eagles sent a fifth-rounder this year and a sixth-rounder in 2027 to the Green Bay Packers for receiver Dontavian Wicks.
Eagles trade on Friday finalizes AJ Brown deal after June 1
The move looks like a deal to add more depth and advancement to the receiving corps for next season. However, Athletics Eagles insider Zack Berman believes the move is about much more than that. He expressed his expectation that Wicks would start for Philly next season. Why are you asking? Because Berman “still hopes.” [Brown] Trading will be done after June 1.”
Additionally, after the trade, the Eagles added a year to Wicks’ contract, which is expected to pay him $12 million. Additionally, new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion has great confidence in his talent after working with him while he was the team’s quarterbacks coach in Green Bay.
Bringing in Wicks and investing a big chunk of cash and two draft picks wasn’t done for him to become a good third receiver. Clearly, the Eagles have high hopes for him and are positioning him as a replacement for the Browns in a trade. And that’s great news for the Bills and Patriots as a deal for the star receiver now seems even more likely.
