He detailed how this approach took place inside the club’s training ground: “One afternoon we were talking about it and one of our important players sent a message to Casemiro. Who wouldn’t want to have Casemiro in their team, right? I would!”
“He immediately replied that his project was not to return to Brazil, his project was to remain in another market,” He said.
“There was no offer”
Rui Costa was asked directly whether Sao Paulo – Casemiro’s youth club – had made an offer. He was emphatic in his answer.
“Does this mean that Sao Paulo have made an offer for Casemiro? No. Sao Paulo have not made any offer for Casemiro and, in my view, it would not be wise to do so without a clear picture of what our team will look like.”He said.
He also clarified the nature of the contact.
“Obviously I couldn’t find myself in that role, at least without understanding if they saw Sao Paulo as an option. That’s what we did.” He said. “There was no offer, no formal enquiry. It was through an important person in the group who sent them a message.”
According to Rui Costa, this occurred shortly after Casemiro publicly confirmed on 22 January that he would not be staying at Manchester United after this season.
