A new report claims that Roman Reigns’ historic WWE Title run was considered half way before it ended.
Heading into 2020, Reigns was already ranked as one of WWE’s top faces. He main evented WrestleMania more than once and had a victory over The Undertaker at the massive annual event. However, he took his game to new heights in the summer of 2020.
After much time away during the COVID pandemic, Reigns returned to WWE television in early summer to regain the company’s top title, and also introduced a new heel version of his character that included making Paul Heyman his “wise man.”
No one knew it at the time, but reclaiming one of the brand’s top titles in August 2020 was the beginning of a 1,316-day run as WWE Champion. His nearly four-year tenure at the top of the mountain cemented his place as a new icon of the company and one of wrestling’s biggest stars of all-time.
Roman Reigns’ historic title run was set to end in 2021

However, that historic run was actually supposed to end much earlier than that. In a new interview with no-contest wrestling showRetired WWE legend John Cena revealed that his original plan was to defeat Reigns at SummerSlam in 2021.
His creative plan before the event was to achieve his record-breaking 17th world title victory over Reigns. However, when the company agreed to a new deal with Brock Lesnar, they decided to move on and instead gave Reigns a clean victory to set up another confrontation with his longtime rival.
If that had happened, it certainly would have changed a lot of history that has since been made, including Roman Reigns’ historic title run and Cena winning his 17th world title at WrestleMania 41 last year.
“It happens to everybody. It happens from the top to the bottom of the card. They’ll change,” Cena said. “They’ll cut out your time. They’ll give you different creative. It happens all the time. That’s why I didn’t freak out.”
